In their life-long focus on the Collective Unconscious, Carl Jung models the unconscious as multilayered and hierarchical patterns which can be organized in certain preferred manners and outline the life's journey along with the gifts and challenges of the baby. He names those patterns archetypes and he finds them in most cultures - inside the myths, stories, symbols, common themes.

Caroline Myss defines them as "energy guides that may direct people toward their spiritual purpose" Each archetype, according to her, represents a "face" along with a "function" from the Collective Unconscious that manifests within each of individual in the unique way.
